Noadswood School U16 Rugby team make it all the way to the Hampshire final!

March 17, 2016

What a year it’s been for our U16 rugby team as they made school history by reaching the County final on the 11th February.

The season started right back in September with excitement at just what this group of players from both year 10 and 11 could achieve. During the first training session you could see players looking around at each other and starting to realise that with hard work and complete commitment they could do something special as a group in both the New Forest League and in the county competition.

The season started very well as we dominated all other teams in the New Forest East league running out comfortable winners and involving over 55 players from year 10 and 11! The scene was set for the up and coming Hampshire Plate competition.

In the first round we faced Toynbee School and won 57-7, but it was clear there was still more to come as the team were still learning to play together and hadn’t quite clicked as a complete unit. It was in round 2 that the hard work in training was clearly beginning to pay off and the team were beginning to develop an exciting brand of expansive rugby winning 37-14. Despite the appalling wet and windy conditions the boys moved the ball around as if it was a dry and sunny day, rewarding the fans who had braved the weather. Now into the Quarter-Finals our team defence started to really gel registering a shutout against Oakland’s Catholic School and continuing our entertaining running rugby winning 31-0 in December.

We’d made it to the final and made school history whatever the result! The entire squad really took training to another level as we looked to perfect every aspect of their unit play and 100% ready for the big final in February. They turned up for early morning sessions in freezing conditions and worked harder than I’d ever seen a school team perform and we knew we’d done absolutely everything we could for the final.

When we arrived at the KES Wellington Sports Ground the sun was shining and the pitch was perfect, the wait was finally over! The team we were to go to battle with for the honour of lifting the Hampshire Plate were Bishops Challoner. The game was a hard fought and brutal encounter as we faced a team with a rich history of winning the county competition, but the new boys on the scene weren’t going to give up on the dream just yet. At the end of the first half Bishops Challoner had moved into a lead, but Noadswood were prepared to dig in to mount a challenge for silverware. We scored a superb team try and the game became very competitive, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough to close the gap by the final whistle.

I’m incredibly proud of the all of the boys and they should be very proud of their achievements as I am. This will be a lasting memory that I will treasure for years to come and no one can ever take that runners up medal from you!
