National Trust Matt West 2016 001

National Trust Workshop

April 19, 2016

Southampton Poet Laureate Matt West was in attendance at Noadswood on 15th April, leading an all-day poetry workshop for year 7 and 8 pupils. The workshop focussed on the artwork of Sir Stanley Spencer, as displayed at the National Trust’s Memorial Chapel in Sandham, which inspired pupils with its powerful anti-war messages. Using Spencer’s neo-primitive paintings and illustrations as a stimulus, Matt guided the pupils on a journey of creativity. They wrote collaborative and individual poems on the theme of war, considering how everyone, not just the combatants, are affected.

We look forward to welcoming Matt back for the Literary Festival in July, when he will once again help pupils in preparation for the Wessex School Poetry Slam competition. After last year’s excellent performance in the individual competition, where Lily Wiseman place third overall, we hope tp do even better this year. Come along to the Creative Writing Club in the LRC on Friday’s after school to get involved!
