What a year for Noadswood Basketball!

April 19, 2016

This season has been another exciting one for Noadswood’s basketball teams. The boys Under 14 team were entered into the Southampton District league for the first time and an Under 13 girls team were entered into the County competition for the first time too.

In the more familiar New Forest league both the Under 14 and Under 16 teams were undefeated and claimed their respective leagues titles once again.  The Under 16 team did well to reach the play-offs of the Southampton Schools’ competition and faced St.Georges who they had already lost to in the league. A fantastic team performance, and great defence, saw them win the game progress  to the final where they would once again be up against Cantell. To reach the final was a big achievement and unfortunately the team just couldn’t find the rhythm they had in the previous game and ended up narrowly losing 62-57. With half of the players in the team coming from Year 9 and 10 the future looks bright for next season.

The Under 13 girls team started the season by putting in a fantastic performance in the New forest U13 basketball tournament. An all girls team played some brilliant basketball and beat most of the all boys teams to finish third in a competition that contained ten teams. This success put them in  a good position going into the County Cup games and once again they won all their games to be crowned Hampshire Cup winners. This victory allowed them to progress in to the National completion and a long trip to Somerset saw the team play in a fantastic game which they won by ine point. Next up were The Maynard School, a traditionally strong school with lots of basketball experience. The girls played some great basketball and lead for a long period of the game. However the size and experience of the opposition were too much for Noadswood who lost the game. The team were paid some big compliments by the opposing coach who said she had not come up against a team with such good ball handling skills and intensity on defence. The girls we disappointed but in their first year they reached the last 16 in the Country – some achievement!

For the Under 14 team the season has be a great learning curve up against some significantly bigger and more physical opposition than they are used too. Fortunately their skill level and experience has allowed them to win games, often quite comfortably, with every playing being involved in every game which is testament to the strength of the entire team. The venture into the Southampton competition was a little bit daunting but as the games went on the team got stronger. Undefeated in the league the boys won their play-off game away to Westgate and faced Sholing in the final. It was once again a battle of size versus skill and after a shaky start where the Noadswood players were a little intimidated they came into their own in the second half to secure a comfortable victory with the game finishing 54-29. The team have one game remaining against Bohunt in the Hampshire cup final and if they win they would be following in the footsteps of last years Under 16 team in achieving an unprecedented treble.
