Noadswood represent at the Wessex Poetry Slam

July 12, 2017

The Wessex Schools annual Poetry Slam convened at Romsey School for the fourth time on Thursday, 6th June and, as founder members, Noadswood School fielded a particularly strong team and enjoyed a wonderful evening.

The Poetry Slam pitches twenty-two young poets in a ‘rap battle’ style competitive performance judged by a panel of experts. Topics ranged from food and drink to meta-poems, i.e. poems about, er… writing poems. Huge fun.

The event was hosted by Southampton’s Poet Laureate, Matt West, who complimented all the young people on their creativity, passion and bravery for performing in front of a large, though very good-natured crowd.

Noadswood’s competitors, Lily Wiseman, Isaac Burnham, Hannah Preston, Ellis Quinn and Ethan Squires were outfitted in a variety of comedic poetry hats – as has become tradition for Noadswood – and really entered into the spirit of the evening, clapping and cheering competitors from the other schools as well.

Hounsdown School took overall champions with a brilliant display from their junior and senior pupils. Noadswood came very close with an almost-too-hard-to-call second place for Isaac Burnham in the Junior category. Well done Isaac!
