Squash honours for Alex Pooley

October 6, 2017

Anderwood’s Alex Pooley defied the odds at the Hampshire under15’s County Squash Championship’s on 23rd/24th September at Winchester Tennis and Squash Club.

Seeded out of the top 4, the challenge was to gain a top 5 finish to secure his place in this seasons Intercounty Team. This appeared a tough task with opponents like the 3rd seed Kian Whelan and talented 2nd seed Harris Faizi who both overcame Alex in recent England Squash national events.

Alex made quick work of his first opponent, winning in straight sets, next was Kian. Alex came out of the blocks quickly ensuring he stuck to his tactics of using height against the hard hitting left hander. Alex came through this tough test 3-1.

Next was Harris who had beaten Alex in their last 2 meetings, but Alex had a game plan to challenge the national top 60 player, finally winning 3-2

The final appeared very difficult against the number 1 seed Joe Sutton-Welsh, the form book was spot-on with Joe overcoming Alex in straight sets. In reflecting his weekends work Alex said “I am delighted with my performance during the tournament, overcoming such talented squash players to be under15’s County runner up is a great achievement”
