Ollie Miell becomes Long Jump County Champion!

June 29, 2018

On Saturday 12th May I competed at the Hampshire County Athletics Championships in Portsmouth, representing the New Forest Juniors AC.  I have been lucky enough to represent Hampshire in Regionals and Nationals before, for both indoor and outdoor athletics, but this was my first time at the County Finals as an U13.

I was competing against 28 other athletes from all over the South of England, including the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands.  Going into the competition I was a little nervous but I knew that I had been performing well in the early part of the season, already producing a new Club Record in the long jump at a meeting two weeks previously in Winchester.

The competition began and in my first round I produced a jump of 4.52m which beat my previous personal best, and was another new Club Record.  I knew I had more in me and in the fourth round I jumped 4.82m, my furthest jump ever, which proved to be the winning jump.

I was County Champion! As well as taking home a gold medal, the jump also placed me 7th in the UK rankings for my age.

Long Jump has become my favourite event to compete in and I follow athletes like Greg Rutherford and Chris Tomlinson to get tips and training ideas.  I have set myself a target to break 5m by the end of the year, and to try and get to the Nationals again!

The County Finals were a brilliant day and showed that hard work and training does pay off!
