Kimberley Barnes fights for British Taekwondo

2 July, 2018

In the past few years Kimberley has developed tremendously as a taekwondo athlete. Since joining her new club Lion Taekwondo in Barnsley in April 2017, Kimberley has successfully won a place in the British Taekwondo squad and is now also in the process of securing a place at the European Taekwondo championships with team GB.

In order for Kimberley to be successful in securing this place in the British squad for Europe, she has to travel to train with the whole team in Manchester twice a month. At these training sessions she is put through her paces by Olympic bronze medallist Sarah Stephenson.

She has been very successful since turning 13 as she is now well established as a cadet fighter. Her notable successes are winning gold in the north east open championships in Durham at the beginning of June. More recently she has won gold in the Kixstar London open in 30 degree heat on June 30th.

She will also be continuing to train with ex team GB athlete Ben Haines at Noadswood School twice a week which has helped her tremendously.

Coming up in the remainder of 2018, Kimberley will be very busy. She is competing in the Polish open in Warsaw in September, the Riga open in Latvia in October and the aptly titled Dracula open in Romania. In the UK, her main focus will be the UK National championships in Sheffield at the end of October.
