Wessex Schools Poetry Slam Competition

17 June, 2019

Every year, Noadswood is proud to participate in the Wessex Schools Poetry Slam, organised by Hampshire Laureate Matt West in collaboration with school libraries throughout the region.

The competition is a chance for aspiring young poets to participate in workshops where they work together to compose and perform their work in a genuinely competitive public forum.

On Friday, 7th June, Matt West visited Noadswood’s Learning Resources Centre for his second Slam workshop of the season with 14 very excited Noadswood pupils from across all year groups. He told our wonderful Librarian Catherine Maitland – who has worked closely with Matt to ensure Noadswood’s involvement in the Slam for several years now – that this year’s Noadwood group was, “the best school slam group,” he had every worked with. Praise indeed!

After a closely fought competition with an incredibly high and consistent standard of work and readings, Jade Efferney took first spot, closely followed by Alicia Bergstrom and Cara Shepherd. These three will appear as Wessex Schools finalists in Romsey on 4th July. Runners up Alex Mitchell and Olivia Kemp will also attend in hope of performing.

We’ll keep you posted on how they all get on. Good luck in the final Noadswood!
