Mathematics

Aims:

The Mathematics Department at Noadswood aims to develop each student to their full potential.  We provide varied and interesting lessons so that the students enjoy their work.

Results:

Our results are amongst the best in Hampshire with average A* to C grades of 80%.  Some students take GCSE Mathematics as well as FSMQ Advanced level Additional mathematics.  Many also have the opportunity to study for a GCSE in statistics as well as the standard GCSE.

Key Stage 3

Students are set in classes by ability from Key Stage 2 results at the start of year 7.  A wide variety of teaching methods and resources are used.  These include formal teaching, interactive games, text book and group work.  Progress is monitored by book marking, termly tests and weekly homework.

Key topics covered in Key Stage 3 include algebra, statistics, geometry and measures and number.  As students move through the key stage they study these topics at an increasingly higher level.

Key Stage 4

All students work towards GCSE Mathematics from EdExcel.  If they are a particularly able mathematician, there will be the opportunity to study Statistics GCSE or the ‘Additional Mathematics’ level 3 qualification as well as the GCSE.  For students who find Mathematics challenging we work at their pace, do all we can to improve their confidence so that they enjoy lessons and achieve their full potential.

MyMaths

MyMaths is an internet based programme which has a huge selection of ‘lessons’ on all topics and for all levels.  Students can access them at home and at school, which is particularly useful for revision and consolidation.  Homeworks can also be set on MyMaths (as each student is given their own login and password) and marked online.  To have a look at a sample page on MyMaths click here.

Maths Watch

Maths Watch is an interactive resource available via the Virtual Learning Environment to provide students with online assistance with their mathematics.   To look at a demonstration version of Maths Watch click here.
