Over the last four years, GCSE Citizenship has become an established and valued part of the curriculum at Noadswood, providing students with the opportunity to study the AQA GCSE Citizenship Studies course. The introduction of Citizenship was driven by a desire to do more than simply provide students with academic knowledge; it was designed to help young people become active, informed and responsible citizens who are aware of the issues affecting their local communities, the United Kingdom and the wider world.
Through the study of topics such as:
- Democracy
- Politics
- Human Rights
- The Legal System &
- Active Citizenship
students develop a deeper understanding of British Values.
The course encourages critical thinking, informed debate and active participation, helping students understand how they can influence change and contribute positively to society.
GCSE Citizenship also provides an excellent foundation for further study at sixth form and college, supporting progression into a range of subjects including Law, Politics, Sociology, Criminology, Government and Public Policy, and related social science qualifications.
By equipping students with analytical, evaluative and communication skills, Citizenship helps prepare them not only for future academic success but also for active participation in modern democratic society.
Assessment
Students will sit two papers, both of which are 1 hour and 45 minutes long. Each paper is marked out of 80 and is worth 50% of the final grade.
Paper 1:
· Section A: Active Citizenship: questions on the citizenship action of others and questions on the students taking citizenship action investigation (40 marks)
· Section B: Politics and participation question (40 marks)
· Question types: multiple-choice, short answer, source-based questions, extended answer
Paper 2:
· Section A: Life in modern Britain questions (40 marks)
· Section B: Rights and responsibilities questions (40 marks)
· Question types: multiple-choice, short answer, source-based questions, extended answer.
